How Face Rank works

Three steps, one ladder. From your first camera check to climbing into the Hall of Fame, everything happens in your browser.

1

Camera Check & Lab Scan

A quick lighting and framing check, then a 3-second on-device scan grades your Face Score across five dimensions: Symmetry, Balance, Jawline, Skin, and Eye Angle. Nothing leaves your browser.

2

Match in the 1v1 Arena

You’ll be paired with another player in your ELO range. Camera on for 15 seconds — the audience watches the match live and votes in real time. No chat. No mic. Just the camera, the clock, and the votes.

3

Climb the ladder

Win streaks earn ELO. The vote margin decides how much. Top 100 players land in the Hall of Fame. Season resets every 30 days, so everyone gets a fresh shot at the top.

🧬

The five Face Score dimensions

Your Face Score is a 0–100 number computed locally in your browser from a 478-point face-landmark mesh. It blends five well-known facial proportion metrics — the same ones used in academic facial analysis — with a calibration curve that prevents everyone clustering in the middle. No frames ever leave your device.

🪨 Symmetry

How closely your left and right facial landmarks mirror one another. We reflect 16 keypoints across your nose bridge and measure the average drift. Higher symmetry tends to read as more “photogenic” on camera.

Weight: 28%
📐 Balance

Classic facial proportions — the “rule of thirds” vertical balance (forehead / brow / nose / chin) and the “rule of fifths” horizontal balance across your face.

Weight: 22%
🪴 Jawline

The angle of the lower jaw landmarks. We estimate your gonial angle and measure jaw width vs face height. A defined jaw scores higher.

Weight: 18%
✨ Skin

Color uniformity across a small cheek patch. Even tone scores higher; patchy or harsh-light scores lower. Lighting matters — the Lab will tell you.

Weight: 16%
👀 Eye Angle

The slope from your inner eye corner to the outer corner — canthal tilt. A neutral or slightly positive tilt is the most-talked-about facial metric online.

Weight: 16%

Tips for your first Face Rank

Coming into Face Rank cold? These four tweaks bump your Face Score by 10–15 points and your win rate by even more. They’re all about the environment, not your face.

💡

Front-light, never back-light

Face the window or the lamp — never have it behind you. Back-light turns your face into a silhouette and tanks your Skin sub-score because the cheek region is underexposed.

📷

Camera at eye level

Laptop on a desk? Prop it up on a stack of books. Below-eye angles distort your Jawline and Balance sub-scores by ~15 points. Phone? Hold it just above your eye line, not in your lap.

🍳

Both eyes visible, hair off the face

The mesh needs to see both eyes clearly to compute Symmetry and Eye Angle. Push hair behind your ears or out of your eyes for the scan.

🎭

Neutral expression first, then improvise

Your Lab scan should be neutral — that’s the “baseline” the audience sees. Once the 15-second arena starts, anything goes — eyebrow raises, half-smiles, side angles all win votes.

FAQ

Face Rank is a live 1v1 face battle in your browser. Two strangers go camera-on for 15 seconds, the audience votes who won the round, and ELO is exchanged. Every player also gets a private Face Score before each queue.

A face-landmark mesh runs entirely in your browser. We compute five sub-scores — Symmetry, Balance, Jawline, Skin and Eye Angle — and never upload, store or transmit your camera frames. Only the five numbers and the match outcome (win/loss) are sent to the server for ELO bookkeeping.

Yes. There’s an instant Skip button, mute and report controls, and the 15-second format keeps rounds short and self-policing. Players reported repeatedly are auto-cooled-down for 24 hours.

No. Your ELO and Face Score are saved locally in your browser. If you want a portable rank you can claim a Google-linked profile later (optional).

Yes — click the Private Room card in the lobby above, hit “Create Room”, and share the 6-character code. Your friend pastes the code and you’re paired instantly — no public queue, no audience.

Yes. Any modern mobile browser with a front camera works — Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge. Portrait mode is recommended for selfie-style framing. iOS 15+ and Android 11+ have the best WebRTC support.

Long enough to read a face, short enough that everyone stays comfortable and rounds stay punchy. It’s the same window TikTok and Reels found works best for “impression” content — just enough to vote on, not enough to overthink.

If a real opponent isn’t found within 30 seconds you’re paired with a Practice Bot — a saved baseline face from a previous player. The match doesn’t affect ELO, but you still get a fresh Face Score and the audience vote.

Yes. The 1v1 Arena has spectator slots — if a live match is happening you can drop in as audience and vote without showing your camera. Audience votes count just like player votes.
